Every once in a while I dream up these perfect little Family Outings. In my rosy vision we are all dressed in coordinating outfits that match any weather condition. We're cheery and excited, bowled over by the wonders of wherever we happen to be. No one needs a snack, no one has a stinky bottom, no one forgot the directions, no one starts howling in a public place. We're happy, on our excellent behavior and smiling in every picture.

It seems there’s never any rest for the weary, especially if you’re a mom. I mean, all day, every second of the day it seems we’re doing something for our little buggers:

School clothes need to be picked out…

Lunches need to be made…

Cereal needs pouring…

Buses need to be caught…

Laundry needs to be washed…

They need help with homework…

And a chauffeur to, like, everywhere…

Groceries need to be bought…

Snacks need to be made…

I'm not a very observant mom. Actually, a better way to put that is: I am not observant AT ALL. I'm rarely the first person to notice if one of my kids has a bump or a scratch, and when I'm in the throes of dealing with a whiny, unhappy kid, it hardly ever occurs to me that he might not be feeling well. I'm much more apt to assume he's just being a brat. I know, I know. That's, like, forty Mom Demerits.
